We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with a leading video game studio based in Lyon, as we embark on the search for a highly talented Chief Technical Officer (CTO).

 

Our client has earned a reputation for crafting exceptional gaming experiences across consoles, PC, and mobile platforms. Currently, they are seeking an accomplished CTO to spearhead and oversee the entire technological landscape of their studio. This pivotal role will play a crucial part in driving innovation and ensuring the successful execution of their game development activities.

 

Job Description:

 

In this critical role, the CTO will serve as a key member of the management team, responsible for overseeing the studio's technological vertical. As the CTO, you will be leading and managing the GameTech, IT, and Dev-Ops departments. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping the studio's strategic objectives, making vital technological choices, and driving the growth and development of the Tech departments.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the representative of the technological vertical within the management team.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the GameTech, IT, and Dev-Ops departments.
  • Collaborate closely with the management team to achieve strategic objectives, focusing on technological choices, risks, and departmental development.
  • Ensure the studio's Tech departments align with the company's overall technological vision, working closely with department directors and managers.
  • Facilitate effective communication about technology with clients, supported by Tech Managers.
  • Implement and enhance standard working procedures and methodologies in collaboration with Tech Managers.
  • Establish best practices to improve team productivity continually.
  • Partner with production teams to identify and remove roadblocks, ensuring successful goal achievement.
  • Evaluate the profitability of projects, technologies, and services, monitoring potential risks.
  • Conduct technical design reviews to identify and address any issues related to gaming technology, IT, or Dev-Ops solutions.
  • Offer support to the teams when faced with technical challenges.
  • Participate in code reviews and support team training initiatives to promote excellence.
  • Collaborate with Tech Leaders to conduct technical interviews and contribute to team growth.
  • Work with Tech Leaders to develop policies and training programs that facilitate ongoing team development.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies through continuous technological monitoring.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a game developer on Unity and Unreal.
  • At least 2 years of experience as Head of Development or CTO in a video game studio.
  • Prior experience as a member of the management team is essential.
  • Proven track record of managing complex projects with 30+ team members, particularly in the PC/console domain.
  • Strong understanding of multiplayer game systems, network replication, and base engine.
  • Demonstrable skills in promoting cooperation, alignment, and diversity among teams.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced environments with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent coaching and leadership abilities.
  • Familiarity with Agile philosophy, concepts, and methodologies.
  • Fluent in both French and English.

Backed by their 10 years of existence, and their experienced teams, their studio has achieved many successes: several titles in the Apple Arcade Top #5, a mobile game self-published with more than 1M players, and a first console experience.

In recent years, their studio has grown and now has more than 70 people. Our client’s common objective is to develop their console activity to pursue even more ambitious projects carried out by their internal teams. Currently, they are developing 2 action/adventure games on PC/Console with prestigious partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and optimize shaders and VFX responding to the stylized DA of their games (Unity)
  • Document the different pipelines and tools you develop
  • Architect and update a common database between the different productions
  • Bring your experience and collaboratively advance the team
  • Anticipate the technical needs of productions (R&D)
  • Respond to the technical needs of productions and opt for the appropriate solutions

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of experience in a shader, VFX or equivalent position
  • Console experience at one of these positions (recent would be a plus)
  • Autonomy, proactivity and very good communication
  • Know how to make a decision and justify it
  • Listening and knowing how to work in a team with different poles
  • Proficiency in Unity (HDRP and URP pipe) and Amplify Shader and/or HLSL script
  • Good understanding of programming languages, mainly Python, JavaScript, MEL and optionally C#
  • Notions on the Substance Suite
  • Appetite for cartoon-style games
  • Good artistic sense and rendering by following an artistic direction
